Update For Tony Via Animal Legal Defense Fund 1.30.2012  

Update
January 30, 2012: Last Monday, Judge Caldwell denied a motion brought by Michael Sandlin and the Tiger Truck Stop (TTS) that sought to suspend Judge Caldwell’s order while Sandlin and TTS appealed. In other words, Tony would have stayed put at the truck stop until after the appeal ran its course, which could take months. Instead, Judge Caldwell’s order instructing the Department to revoke the permit will go into effect right away. Sadly, this does not necessarily mean Tony is leaving the truck stop soon. Sandlin has filed his own lawsuit against the Department, which has been temporarily restrained from taking any action to remove Tony. Our attorneys are doing everything they can to resolve these conflicting orders to make sure Tony makes his way to a humane, accredited sanctuary as soon as possible.

Just when I loose faith in our youth today, along comes an 11 year old young lady with a passion for large cats. Well, all my loyal listeners know that the way to my heart is through cats of all shapes, sizes, and breeds. This one young person has made it her mission to save Tony The Tiger who has been locked in a cement and iron prison, alone, for over 10 years at a truck stop while putting up with being alone, teased, harrassed, loud sounds at all hours of the day and night and inhaling toxic fumes.
Join me as I talk to this little package of huge inspiration and we will hear all about what she has done to help Tony become free. Now we have won one battle. The owner of the truck stop was denied a renewal license to keep Tony but his current license doesn't end until the end of December. Poor Tony needed to be set free 10 years ago!

I was honestly at a loss for words when I saw the photos and watched the videos of Tony at his horrible truck stop abode in Louisiana. On the one hand, Leo di Caprio is trying to save tigers, and on the other hand, idiotic individuals who violate numerous laws are allowed to keep these beautiful creatures as “pets” – that too at a polluted, stressful roadside location which can’t be good for anyone, let alone a beautiful tiger.

Join the Animal Legal Defense Fund in urging the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to revoke the permit that allows Michael Sandlin to display Tony, a ten-year-old Siberian-Bengal tiger, at the Tiger Truck Stop in Grosse Tete, Louisiana, where he has lived with no other tiger companions since 2003.

In addition to being subjected to noise and diesel fumes 24-hours a day, Tony is also frequently harassed and taunted by visitors at the truck stop. His enclosure is devoid of adequate enrichment, such as logs, trees, or complex vegetation that would allow him to engage in natural tiger behaviors. He has no pool of water large enough to allow him to submerge himself to cool off in the blazing heat of the summer. As a result of the stress of his confinement, Tony constantly paces on the hard concrete surface of his enclosure, putting him at risk for dangerous and painful veterinary conditions. Michael Sandlin, the owner of Tony and the truck stop, has been cited by the USDA due to violations of the Animal Welfare Act, including a lack of proper sanitation and improper feeding practices.

On April 11, 2011, ALDF filed a lawsuit against the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and its secretary Robert Barham, arguing that he violated state law in granting a permit allowing Sandlin to exhibit Tony at the Tiger Truck Stop.

No Justice for Tony the Tiger

Traversing Interstate 10 through the state of Louisiana, one will not be able to help coming across the “Tiger Truck Stop” at exit 139, where a travesty of justice and blatant animal abuse continues to occur. Tony the Tiger has spent every day, seven days a week, pacing and caged, since he was born a decade ago, as truck stop “onlookers” ogle him from the other side of his concrete prison. Tony’s predecessor, Selina, a white Bengal tiger who no longer must endure Tony’s dismal torture, is now stuffed, residing above the salad bar of the Tiger Truck Stop Restaurant.

Tony’s truck stop owners, the Sandlin family, have sadly been granted new permits to continue keeping him caged and abused, even though previous laws existed against “housing” such an animal, prior to the court cases against them. The state of Louisiana seems to have little issue “bending their own rules” to satisfy the Sandlins, a family that lost the right to keep such animals in the state of Texas in the late 1980′s. Even whilst violations existed in regard to the conditions where the tigers are kept, Tony still sits in his cell, wasting away, underdeveloped as a tiger and utilized as a roadside tourist attraction.

Many have worked frantically to organize several efforts against the re-permitting of Tony as a possession of the Sandlin family for their roadside attraction and their continued abuse of tigers through ownership in general. Over and again, even with the help of large anti-abuse organizations at their side and the support of over 10,000 people, the Sandalins seem to come out on top whilst Tony wastes away. The effort to release Tony has obviously hit legal walls. Corruption exists that is bound by blatant uncaring for this majestic being. Tony does not belong in a concrete cell that degrades his health each and every day. Veterinary doctors who have viewed Tony up close have already warned those who care in regard to his fate to prepare for the worst. Please join in the endeavor to draw more public opinion against allowing the Sandalin family to own any more tigers in the future. Even if we must all watch Tony suffer and rot away in his prison, perhaps we can make his sacrifice mean something. Stand with those against the wanton abuse that the Sandalin family has committed against tigers by using them as a “sideshow” attraction.

No tiger should have to live the way Tony does. Let us, together, try to find a way of putting an end to this travesty. Even if we can not save Tony, maybe we CAN stop this from happening to another tiger and the exit 139 truck stop in Louisiana will be a “tiger truck stop” no more.

WYNNEWOOD, Oklahoma -- The Garvin County Sheriff's Office confirmed investigators are looking into possible computer crimes by an alleged "planted" employee inside the G.W. Exotic Animal Park.

Joe Schreibvogel, director of the G.W. Exotic Animal Park, said the crimes were committed by a member of the animals rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, who was planted inside the facility and posed as a staff member.

"During our investigation, we found the camera that was purchased for him by PETA to do this job," Schreibvogel said. "And we found that he had created a diversion to get access to the director's computer and download his hard drive without his knowledge."

A spokesman for the Garvin County Sheriff's Office said a police report has been filed and investigators are looking into a possible computer crime committed at the facility, although no arrest has been made. The case may be turned over to the Garvin County District Attorney.

"PETA has, in the past, cost us millions by sending in undercover spies and lying to the press and on the Internet to discredit our name and exploit us for money" Schreibvogel said. "Paying a spy and downloading your hard drive is criminal."

PETA spokesperson Jane Dollinger said in a statement that they believe G.W. Exotic Animal Park has been mistreating animals.

"G.W. Exotic Animal Park is a notorious pseudo-sanctuary that makes its money from continually breeding animals and tearing the baby animals away from their mothers, dragging them to malls and events for photo ops with the public, then discarding or warehousing them when they reach maturity. In an undercover investigation some years ago, PETA found dead, dying, and injured animals; extremely crowded conditions; a serious lack of basic necessities such as food, water, and veterinary care; shamefully inadequate housing; and untrained and insufficient staff who were intentionally cruel to animals. G.W. Exotic has been furious about PETA's findings, all of which were obtained legally."

Schreibvogel said the former employee, Samuel Crowell, is a 25-year old who first came to the refuge nearly four years ago as a volunteer. Schreibvogel said Crowell's girlfriend is the one who tipped park employees off to the alleged scheme by PETA. The organization allegedly was paying Crowell $50 per day for his work.

Iberville Parish Refuses to Free Tony the Tiger

An animal-rights activist made an impassioned plea to Louisiana wildlife commissioners Thursday, calling on them to withhold renewal of a permit allowing an Interstate 10 truck stop to keep a live tiger on display as a roadside attraction.
Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission members, however, declined to intervene in the matter. One of them said the issue is properly under the control of the state Wildlife and Fisheries Department, and not the commission.
Mary Haik, of Zachary, argued before the commission that the tiger exhibit at Tiger Truck Stop in Grosse Tete is an example of “one of those times when the whole world looks at Louisiana and thinks that we reek of corruption and idiocy.”
Haik asserted the state has stood by doing nothing while Iberville Parish government has made exceptions to its parish ordinances in order to allow the truck stop to continue to exhibit Tony, a 10-year-old Siberian-Bengal tiger, on the property.
An Iberville Parish ordinance enacted in 1993 prohibits parish residents from owning wild, exotic and vicious animals for exhibition.
The tiger exhibit was grandfathered in last year when the Iberville Parish Council approved a new ordinance allowing the truck stop to keep the tiger.
The new ordinance carries several conditions, however, such as requiring liability insurance, training staff how to deal with a possible tiger escape and specifying that the tiger’s diet must be approved by a licensed veterinarian.
The ordinance further stipulates that the truck stop be subject to unannounced inspections to make sure the tiger is in good health and that Tony is the last tiger the business would be able to exhibit.
Haik argued that the Wildlife and Fisheries Commission should not renew a state permit allowing the tiger to remain on display in what she described as unhealthy conditions.
The tiger has been “illegally owned” since 2000, she said, citing the parish ordinance enacted in 1993 that prohibits exhibition of big cats such as Tony in Iberville Parish.
“If laws are written to protect these endangered species, and then the laws are not enforced as written, then why write them in the first place?” Haik asked the commissioners.
Commissioner Patrick Morrow suggested after the meeting adjourned that Haik should have taken her case against Tony’s continued captivity at the truck stop to Wildlife and Fisheries Department staff members and not to the commission itself.
“The commission enacts rules and regulations,” Morrow said. “As long as the truck stop is in compliance with existing laws, the department, from the commission’s standpoint, has no reason to deny the permit.”

The Advocate reports the permit issued by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries allows Tiger Truck Stop to keep Tony, a 10-year-old Siberian-Bengal tiger, on display throughout 2011.
Wildlife and Fisheries press secretary Bo Boehringer said Thursday that Tony is the last privately owned big and exotic cat in the state.
Boehringer said the permit was required after a 2006 legislative action gave regulatory authority over private ownership of potentially dangerous animals to Wildlife and Fisheries.
