Back at the beginning of the year, Tachoblog reported on the plight of Tony the Tiger who is owned by Michael Sandlin of the Tiger Truck Stop in Grosse Tete, Louisiana.  If you haven’t heard about Tony before, then you need to read Put A Tiger In Your Tank But NOT At The Truckstop Says Tachoblog.
We’ve had some further information on this story so thought it would be a good idea to post a follow up.
In a  CNN report aired 12 November 2010 the program, ‘Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell’, Michael Sandlin made some comments.  According to AskTheTrucker, some of these comments were ‘totally false’.
This is the CNN report

AskTheTrucker says, “In the report, Sandlin states that Tony is a ‘beautiful, healthy’ tiger and is ‘not isolated’.
When asked about the ‘Do Not Throw Rocks’ sign on the outside of the cage, Sandlin counters with that the only people throwing objects at Tony are the animal rights activists, and refers to them as ‘domestic terrorists’. He also states that Tony is ‘very well taken care of.”

AskTheTrucker went to see Tony in his cage on 15 October 2010 and posted a video of what he saw on YouTube.  He says that he also also supplied an unedited copy to CNN with permission for them to use it in their program.  He then told Tachoblog that for ‘editing reasons, the video did not make the Issues report’.
According to AskTheTrucker, “The video shown on the report was a much older version.  You can see grass and planted flowers and the tiger in the video is much ‘fatter’.  This photo of Tony was taken during our visit and you can clearly see his sunken stomach and our video shows him spending his time eating grass within his cage.

“For Sandin to lay claim that this is a healthy animal in a beautiful environment is wrong.   For him to say that animal lovers are the ones throwing rocks at Tony the Tiger, is an outright lie.  One does not have to be an ‘animal activist’ to understand outright abuse.”
This is the video that AskTheTrucker made.  Watch it and decide for yourself who you think is telling the truth.
As Tachoblog said in our original post about Tony, we come from a country that’s famed for its love of animals, and think that the time for Tony to be moved somewhere better for him (even if AskTheTrucker is wrong and Sandlin is right – not that we believe that)  is long overdue and hope that this will happen very, very soon.
